Films of the South Asia Collection

lagaanFrom thought-provoking documentaries to the glitz of Bollywood, the films represented in Cornell University Library’s South Asia Collection reflect the diversity of the subcontinent.

Whether for research or recreation these films, which are housed in the Olin Library Media Center, offer glimpses of Asian life and culture not found in books, manuscripts or other media. Though many have subtitles, the foreign-language films in the collection include works in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Tamil.

India, in particular, has a rich film culture and is well represented. Films such as Nalini by day, Nancy by night, a 2005 documentary about the outsourcing of American jobs to India, as well as the famous Bollywood “curry western” Sholay are among the holdings in the collection.

Search the Library’s catalog to find these movies and other Asian films or visit the reference desk in Media Center to ask for help.
